him alive. Colonel Sapt will then have the drawbridge run out and it is likely that Rupert of

Hentzau, possibly with De Gautet will rush across the bridge to see what is happening.

Rudolf Rassendyll himself equipped with a small ladder and hiding in the moat, will get onto

the bridge and kill Rupert of Hentzau and possibly De Gautet too. Taking from them the keys

to the rooms in the old castle he will then lead a swift raid to try and save the King.

in the room and ordered Rupert to go back to the Old Castle before the drawbridge was

pulled back. About ten minutes later, Rudolf Rassendyll again saw Rupert of Hentzau who

saw swimming across the moat holding a sword between his teeth. He reached to the gate of

the New Castle, unlocked it and went inside.

60. How was Black Michael killed unexpectedly?

Ans: Rupert of Hentzau loved Madame Antoinette de Mauban but he knew she was

interested in Black Michael. Rupert entered her room with an intention of molesting her.

Upon this she shrieked for help and Black Michael rushed to her room. In a savage fight

between these two men, Black Michael became the victim of Rupert and got killed.

61. How did Rudolf Rassendyll fight with the three villains and reach to the King’s room?

Ans: De Gautet, Bersonin and Detchard were guarding the King’s room. Upon hearing the

noise of swords in Mauban’s room, De Gautet came out to investigate. Rassendyll stabbed

him, he then took out the keys from his pocket and opened the door and made his way to the

outer room by the King’s cell where Bersonin and Detchard were present. When they

unbolted the door on hearing the noise, Rassendyll was able to burst in. He killed Bersonin

with his sword but Detchard rushed quickly towards the room to kill the King. The doctor

tried to save the King but was killed. Rassendyll fought bravely with Detchard who was a

good swordsman but at last, Rassendyll succeeded in his fight and killed Detchard.

Rassendyll got also wounded in his fight.

62. How did Rupert of Hentzau escape after killing Black Michael?

Ans: After killing Black Michael, Rupert rushed towards the drawbridge to escape from

there. When Madame de Mauban yelled that Black Michael had been killed by him, the

servants of Michael blocked his way and Mauban took an aim at him, but the shot missed and

Rupert rushed to the moat. Rassendyll ran after him but Rupert came out of the moat and

seized a horse from a farm girl and vanished into the forest galloping; whereas, Rassendyll

fainted on account of his injuries.

63. How did Sapt and Fritz reach toward the unconscious King?

Ans: Fritz Von Tarlenheim had been with Colonel Sapt’s party throughout the night. They

could not break into the New Castle against the plan because Johann had been wounded in

the fight between Michael and Rupert. When they eventually broke in, they found Michael

dead. Colonel Sapt and Fritz then made their way to the Old Castle, found there the dead

bodies of Bersonin, de Gautet and the doctor. They found the King lying there unconscious.

64. How dis Princess Flavia learn that Rudolf rassendyll was not the real king?

Ans: After rescuing the real king, Colonel Sapt sent Fritz in search of Rassendyll and put

out a story that will explain the events of the night without disclosing the fact that Rassendyll

had been posing as the King since the day of coronation. The story they put out was Black

Michael had been confining at the Castle of Zenda an unnamed friend of the King.When the

King went there to rescue his friend from the illegal detention of Black Michael, he killed

Black Michael and got wounded gravely.

Princess Flavia insists on seeing the King after hearing the story. She is riding to the Castle of

Zenda just when Rassendyll, supported by Fritz reaches the edge of the forest by the road to

the castle. The farm girl, seeing Rassendyll and believing him to be the King runs to Princess

Flavia saying that the King is wounded and lying in the nearby bushes. Princess Flavia with

Colonel Sapt walked up to the wounded Rassendyll. At this point, Rassendyll and Colonel

Sapt both tell her that he is not the real king.

65. How does Princess Flavia feel after knowing Rassendyll is not the real king?

Ans: Flavia is in love with Rassendyll for she has always taken him for the King. She is

broken after knowing the identity of Rassendyll but resolves to sacrifice her love for the

State. She is inclined to Rassendyll but decides to marry Rudolf Elphberg and keeps the

interest of Ruritania before her love.

66. How does Rudolf Rassendyll leave Ruritania after completing his expedition of

rescuing the King in Ruritania?

Ans: Rudolf Rassendyll leaves from Ruritania after restoring to the throne its real owner.

Both the Princess and Rassendyll decide to keep the interest of the kingdom before their love.

He attends to the deeply grateful King and has a last painful interview with Princess Flavia.

Colonel Sapt and Fritz escort him to the station across the frontier and bid him farewell with

great affection and respect. He rests at the Tyrol letting his friends know about his

whereabouts to avoid any further inquiries and eventually returns to England.
